Stony Brook Animal Hospital is located in Louisville, KY. We are a full-service animal hospital providing veterinary care to dogs, cats, and exotic animals. From wellness exams and vaccines to diagnostics and complex surgical procedures, our clients’ pets will receive high quality care at our hospital. Veterinary Assistant

Position Skills:
• Assist DVMs and credentialed veterinary technicians with appointments, prepping patients for surgery
and minor procedures, surgical assisting, hospital disinfecting, and pro-actively set up for any
procedures or diagnostic tests
• Restrain animals in a safe, efficient, and caring manner
• Obtain accurate vitals, obtain medical histories, and/or note any changes of patient’s condition to DVM
• Collect and prepare laboratory samples such as fecal, urine, and ear cytologies
• Care and maintenance of all medical equipment including laboratory machines, surgical packs,
anesthesia machines, and any other tools that are essential to daily operations
• High quality client communication including patient updates, assist with scheduling, andquestions

Position Requirements:
• High School diploma or GED certificate
• Professionally and respectfully work with others as a team
• Knowledge of medical procedures and animal handling
• Must possess strong communication skills, have good judgment, and be able to manage stressful situations
• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
• Pay commensurate with experience.

Key Responsibilities

As an LVT, you will play a critical role in patient care, supporting both veterinarians and pet owners through a wide range of clinical and client-focused responsibilities:

Clinical & Technical Duties

  • Assist veterinarians with examinations and procedures, including:
    • Venipuncture and IV catheter placement
    • Administering vaccines, medications, and treatments
    • Digital radiography (X-ray) and imaging preparation
    • Filling prescriptions and maintaining pharmacy inventory
  • Perform laboratory diagnostic testing, including:
    • Blood draws and analysis
    • Urinalysis, fecal exams, and cytology
  • Provide nursing care and patient monitoring:
    • Monitor vital signs and patient recovery
    • Observe behavior and report changes
    • Clean and dress wounds

Anesthesia & Surgical Support

  • Prepare patients for surgery
  • Induce, monitor, and maintain anesthesia
  • Assist veterinarians during surgical procedures
  • Clean, sterilize, and maintain surgical instruments

Dental & Imaging

  • Perform dental cleanings (prophylaxis)
  • Take diagnostic X-rays
  • Assist with dental procedures 

Patient Care & Handling

  • Safely handle and restrain patients during exams and treatments
  • Intake patients, obtain accurate medical histories, and carry out treatment plans

Client Communication

  • Educate pet owners on:
    • Nutrition and wellness care
    • Parasite prevention
    • Behavioral guidance
    • Post-operative care instructions
  • Maintain clear, accurate medical records and ensure effective communication

Emergency & General Support

  • Perform triage on emergency patients and provide immediate first aid
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient clinical environment

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Technology (AVMA-accredited program preferred)
  • Licensure: VTNE passed and current state licensure/registration
  • Skills:
    • Strong technical abilities (venipuncture, catheter placement, anesthesia monitoring)
    • Proficiency in medical terminology
    • Compassion, attention to detail, and strong work ethic
